Team in Training
Last night was the information meeting for Team in Training at Chelsea Piers. We met the mentors and our coaches, as well as the other men and women that will be training with us for this specific marathon. Everyone was super nice and just as pumped to be there as we were.
After they talked to us, they had a pop quiz of sorts, and I was picked to answer the first question, scoring myself a sweet little giftbag of goodies. Had I KNOWN that the people after me were getting WAY better prizes, I'd have waited to raise my hand (my TNT nalgene-mousepad-cap giftbag vs. a 60-min swedish massage, 6-month membership to the chelsea piers sportscenter, etc) BUT....I digress...
We talked a bit about the society and and how cancer has affected all our lives, and Lindsay and I were able to write my mom's name down as our "honored teammate" -- we'll be running in her honor, which is very special to me.
So....the fancy kick-off to the fall training season for the whole New York chapter is on May 10, and training begins on May 13.
Saturday morning at
8:30am (thus...no more friday night drinking)....and rumor has it that it's a 4-mile run. Eek!
Fundraising link will be up soon....time to raid your piggy banks, kids....
The Reason
So....this will be my little introduction to why this blog even exists.
I had only been in New York for about 3 months when I got the phone call that confirmed that my mother had been diagnosed with
MALT Lymphoma -- a blood cancer. After many phone calls and prayers, I finally reached a point where I can accept it for what it is and just try to do what I can to ease the situation for my mom, for my family and for myself. My mom just finished her 3rd cycle of chemotherapy (3 more to go!) and I have been in New York for the majority of her treatment. I feel like I should be home or I should be doing something....anything. I can only send her so many hats and scarves and words of encouragement before I feel useless again. So....that's where
Team in Training came into play.
So....short of shaving all my hair off (which I was thisclose to doing)....this is the best thing I can do to support my mom from afar. I'll train with a group of runners in NYC for 5 months, ending with the Nike Women's Marathon in San Francisco! Not only will I help to raise a lot of money for The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, but with all that running, I'll be well on my way on Mission: Hot Body. ;-)
